In 2020, The Metropolitan Museum of Art, in partnership with Verizon, decided to invite art enthusiasts into its world while pushing the boundaries of the canvas. We were selected as UNIT9's digital partner. Together, we created a 360 interactive masterpiece that blends virtual and physical spaces to make art a multi-sensory experience.
Art enthusiasts could journey through all galleries at their own pace – like a once-in-a-lifetime private tour. They also played games and got a chance to steal artwork and place it in their homes through the power of AR. (All art was returned to the Met, unharmed)
The Met Unframed was one of the most-awarded digital experiences of 2021.
The interactive exploration consisted of a dozen galleries at The Met through multiple 360 vantage points, all true-to-scale.
A detail of innovation came from how people moved through the spaces – physical motions of their phone simulated real-life adventuring at the museum.
Browser-based AR experiences, powered by the 8th Wall, offered unique interactive activities to the users. To access these artful AR delights, people had to unlock them by solving various puzzles. We leveraged Verizon's new 5G network to deliver high-fidelity visuals and animations.
Layering art history into mini-games, visitors got rewarded for playing by unlocking mind-bending experiences and AR artworks.
We built ten different types of puzzles, from classic trivia to symbol finding in virtual 360 rooms. Ultimately proving there's a little art historian in all of us.
Our technology team had to work lightning fast to support the creative process. We developed custom tools to test gameplay logic, 360 virtual renders, and seamlessly integrated CMS data.
Through the power of technology, we expanded the world of art.
